Welcome to the Union Views web site.
Union is a Victorian era town that offers a step back in time.
Named for patriotic reasons during the Civil War, is the second largest community
in Union County, with a population of around 2,000.
Union is known for its many Victorian homes that line the streets and present a
veritable history of architecture in the Pacific Northwest. Union is also home
to the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and Rodeo, the oldest west of the Mississippi,
having begun in 1908.
Just beyond Union is the Catherine Creek recreation area. Fishing in the crystal
clear waters is good, and camping facilities are available at Catherine Creek State
Park. The Eagle Cap Wilderness area is nearby, and the day-hiker or backpacker may
view eagle, elk, bear, cougar, deer or bobcat on the upper trails.
A little spot near Union called Telocaset is the exact geographic center, north to
south and east to west, of the 50 United States.
In 1862, Conrad Miller settled in the area and planted apple and pear trees and
began one of the first nurseries in the Grande Ronde Valley. Other settlers soon
followed and a town was established. Many of the early settlers around Union
engaged in the freighting business, yoking their oxen into teams of six and
carrying merchandise from The Dalles or Umatilla to the mines around Auburn
in Baker County. Victorian homes and charming brick buildings still line the
main street through town.
